So, what is that exactly, this “Digital Workplace”?

A digital workplace is a central digital work platform that makes information, tools and services available anywhere and anytime, as an organization web-based portal.

The digital workplace is a collective term for tools that make it possible to work collaboratively, exchange information and reconcile this data with irreplaceable company applications (such as ERP’s).

The workplace of the future will continue to move in a new direction. Working independently of time and place is becoming more and more important to employees. The remote office principle is already offered in many companies, but until the beginning of the COVID-19 Pandemic in spring 2020, just a very few employees could regularly use this option.
The reasons are often the company’s lack of resources or the mixing of work and private life, which discourages many employees.

The COVID-19 Pandemic truly acted as a trend accelerator and many companies worldwide did not have another choice than to find ways, almost overnight, for employees to work remotely.

However, this acceleration can be seen as very positive for businesses. The free flow of information in the digital workplace has positive effects on the agility and innovative strength of modern companies. At the same time, it promotes employee engagement and satisfaction by delivering the right information to the right people at the right time. The digital workplace is the “totality of the access infrastructures, applications and device platforms required by information or knowledge workers who need them to carry out their work tasks and exercise cooperation.”

The following aspects are usually mentioned as the main advantages of the Digital Workplace:

  • A better availability of information and processes
  • The support of location and time independent work
  • The promotion of company-wide knowledge exchange
  • The provision of a central platform instead of numerous isolated solutions
  • The simplification of workflows and work processes through digitization
  • The promotion of commitment and employee satisfaction
  • A strong increase in productivity and as a result a strong increase in customer satisfaction

The basic principles of the Digital Workplace are integration and collaboration: data from all software systems used are brought together on a central platform. This not only provides information and applications, but also promotes cross-location collaboration and the exchange of knowledge.
